Let's see...lets start with the horrible, broken English that goes from cover-to-cover in this book. If you are going to produce a subject matter pertaining to an American company, that will primarily be purchased and read in the United States, than one would think that you would at least invest in obtaining a proof reader who is fluent in English, and not the broken European text that is in this book.There are really great photos of Revell's history in this book, and that is really the only saving grace here. There are only 28 picture captions in the entire book explaining the 91 pages worth of photos (which generally average 3-5 per page!). There is no explanation of the subjects rarity or points of interest from their production. What does exist is a year-by-year break down from 1950-1986 that covers little, if anything from the subject years associated photos!Additionally, there are mistakes in the book as well that anyone that grew up in the 70's and 80's would find straight out. If you are writing a historical tome of a major plastic modeling company, then you should probably know that the big, beautiful, 1/32 scale F4U Corsair sold so well as a result of the TV show "Baa Baa Blacksheep", not "Baa Baa Black-Ship" (pg62). Also, most everyone who built bi-planes were excited to see the 1/32 scale Sopwith Camel reissued when Revell tied in with the movie "The Great Waldo Pepper". Apparently, I have been wrong all these years in thinking that that was Robert Redford starring in that role (as the box picture even shows on page 68 btw)...yet, according to the magnificent research by this author, I am now told that I was wrong, as was the marketing division of Revell, and that this movie actually starred George Peppard (pg 56).Last, I would like to conclude this review by saying that I had a great affection for the Revell WW2 Air Battle Scenes and Air Show sets produced in 1976-77, as well as the Electronic Action Kits of 1979-80. I was disappointed to see that the author injected his own evaluation of the Battle Scenes by calling them "lousy ideas". I have collected these kits from shows and ebay in order to relive a bit of my youth and show younger generations the thought and joy that went into building such kits. Three WW2 aerial combat scenes, three really neat boxes that lined up to create an Air Show with different events taking place, or even those 1/32 Huey Rescue Chopper or 1/24 Paramedic Ambulance that had engine sounds, spinning rotors, blinking lights, or sirens....well, they didn't even warrant a mention in the text, and barely any photos.If you are looking for a picture book of some great Revell products, than spend the money on this...but if you are looking for a full stage, accurate and historical book on the history of a great modeling company....than don't waste your time or cash.
The book is full of nice color pictures of Revell models, and is worth the price I paid. You have to gloss over the many grammatical mistakes but the meaning is always clear, so it's not bad (if you are an English schoolteacher you might need a Vallium before reading it). I enjoyed it.I would have liked to have captions describing the pictures, and a lot of the time I had to guess at it.
I've been building Revell models since the 50's! Great to take the trip again down the Memory Lane and recall again the fun, with the Highway Pioneers, Miniature Masterpieces, the 1/72 B-17, the Dam Buster, Liberator, et.al. I actually still have most of the ones I built, from junior high school, through my six years in the Air Force! A delight to learn more about the chronology and development!
Great photos, but the text offers limited information. It is a fairly small book for the price; still it has value for the fan of Revell models.
